Review

A Washington Post Notable Book "We are rapidly ripening for fascism. This American writer leaves us with no illusions about ourselves." —Svetlana Alexievich, Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature"Timothy Snyder reasons with unparalleled clarity, throwing the past and future into sharp relief. He has written the rare kind of book that can be read in one sitting but will keep you coming back to help regain your bearings. Put a copy in your pocket and one on your bedside table, and it will help you keep going for the next four years or however long it takes." —Masha Gessen"Please read this book. So smart, so timely." —George Saunders“Easily the most compelling volume among the early resistance literature. . . . A slim book that fits alongside your pocket Constitution and feels only slightly less vital. . . . Clarifying and unnerving. . . . A memorable work that is grounded in history yet imbued with the fierce urgency of what now.” —Carlos Lozada, The Washington Post “Snyder knows this subject cold. . . . It is impossible to read aphorisms like ‘post-truth is pre-fascism’ and not feel a small chill about the current state of the Republic. . . . Approach this short book the same you would a medical pamphlet warning about an infectious disease. Read it carefully and be on the lookout for symptoms.” —Daniel W. Drezner, The New York Times Book Review"As Timothy Snyder explains in his fine and frightening On Tyranny, a minority party now has near-total power and is therefore understandably frightened of awakening the actual will of the people." —Adam Gopnik, The New Yorker“Snyder is superbly positioned to bring historical thinking to bear on the current political scene. . . . These unpretentious words remind us that political resistance isn’t a matter of action-movie heroics, but starts from a willingness to break from social expectations.” —Jeet Heer, The New Republic“The perfect clear-eyed antidote to Trump’s deliberate philistinism. . . . These 128 pages are a brief primer in every important thing we might have learned from the history of the last century, and all that we appear to have forgotten.” —Tim Adams, The Guardian“On Tyranny demands to be read.” —The Forward“The manifesto we need. . . . Snyder detects dangerous trends in American politics that may be less visible to most citizens who cannot believe that our country, with its system of checks and balances, could succumb to illiberalism or authoritarianism.” —Darryl Holter, Los Angeles Review of Books“Bracing. . . . On Tyranny is a call to action. . . . A brisk read packed with lucid prose.” —Vox

This is a short, quick book to read, perhaps 30-45 minutes of your time. And at only $2.99 (on Kindle) you can't afford not to buy it. For those who found his list of 20 points elsewhere on the web for free, don't let that suffice. The book adds commentary to his list, and it's worth the small cost. For those of you not acquainted with Snyder, he's a historian of Eastern Europe and has written extensively on the turmoil--the killing fields--of Eastern Europe in the 20th century. He knows whereof he speaks.I will offer you a couple of his thoughts from his concluding remarks. In addressing what he terms "the politics of inevitability," he notesUntil recently, we Americans had convinced ourselves that there was nothing in the future but more of the same. The seemingly distant traumas of fascism, Nazism, and communism seemed to be receding into irrelevance. We allowed ourselves to accept the politics of inevitability, the sense that history could move in only one direction: toward liberal democracy. After communism in eastern Europe came to an end in 1989–91, we imbibed the myth of an “end of history.” In doing so, we lowered our defenses, constrained our imagination, and opened the way for precisely the kinds of regimes we told ourselves could never return.Snyder, Timothy. On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century (Kindle Locations 765-769). Crown/Archetype. Kindle Edition. But he then addresses the converse attitude, what he calls "the politics of eternity." About this attitude, he statesIn the politics of eternity, the seduction by a mythicized past prevents us from thinking about possible futures. The habit of dwelling on victimhood dulls the impulse of self-correction. Since the nation is defined by its inherent virtue rather than by its future potential, politics becomes a discussion of good and evil rather than a discussion of possible solutions to real problems. Since the crisis is permanent, the sense of emergency is always present; planning for the future seems impossible or even disloyal. How can we even think of reform when the enemy is always at the gate?Id. at 810-815In contrast to both of these attitudes, he places history (an encomium with which I could not agree more):Both of these positions, inevitability and eternity, are antihistorical. The only thing that stands between them is history itself. History allows us to see patterns and make judgments. It sketches for us the structures within which we can seek freedom. It reveals moments, each one of them different, none entirely unique. To understand one moment is to see the possibility of being the cocreator of another. History permits us to be responsible: not for everything, but for something. The Polish poet Czesław Miłosz thought that such a notion of responsibility worked against loneliness and indifference. History gives us the company of those who have done and suffered more than we have.Id. at 822-827In his peroration, he exhorts young people especially (although it applies to all of us)One thing is certain: If young people do not begin to make history, politicians of eternity and inevitability will destroy it. And to make history, young Americans will have to know some. This is not the end, but a beginning. “The time is out of joint. O cursed spite,/That ever I was born to set it right!” Thus Hamlet. Yet he concludes: “Nay, come, let’s go together.”Id. at 830-834Buy this book and read it!

Shatters any illusion that democracy is a given in the US or in any country. One detail I keep thinking about: Snyder's argument that the evisceration of privacy and the humiliation of the individual is a very old fascist technique. Consider that when you think about the email breaches of the last election, or why doxing is a weapon of choice among the cyber brown shirts. Another: the long and terrible legacy of dismantling the rule and protections of law as "exceptions" -- which quickly become permanent -- due to safety "emergencies." Americans may be tested on that sooner than later. Democracy has and can become totalitarianism in but a few months. The time to stand up for institutions, fair voting, and (this is surprisingly crucial) the ethics of your profession is NOW -- not after it's too late.

If I compare this 'booket' to Petersen's work, it pales in insignificance and poor judgement. It is clearly written with a bias against President Trump, but more importantly uses the briefest of snippets in history to poorly justify his claims. He ignores the current 'Ministry of Truth' deployed by our media (a clearly socialist groupthink), in which "nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right." (1984) History has shown that it is the socialists and communists that devolve to mob rule and totalitarianism. This is the nationalism that "imposes itself on people incapable of understanding it", not the Trump form of nationalism which is essentially an enforcement of truth and justice, adhering to the will of the people and the Constitution that has served this country so well. For a History Lecturer, this effort gets a minimum grade! (and is a poor reflection on his university). He has NO idea of tyranny. If he were to draw conclusions on tyranny from the 20th Century he would look at North Korea, China, Russia, Germany, Italy, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, South Africa and the many other countries that have failed under the guise of socialism which devolves to autocracy and totalitarianism, not to mention economic failure.Don't waste your time or your money on this one. Yale? Really?

It's far from an academic paper in that the author is clearly biased and offers little in the way of contrary opinion, but it never claimed to be anything else. For those who have not studied history extensively this book is likely informative. For those who haven't studied history lately, this book likely contains some reminders. For those well versed and practiced in the study of history and geopolitics, this book offers nothing new, rather it places current geopolitical phenomena in historical context.

Read all 3 books. I guess that means I liked it..... One of the best Sci-Fys to come out in a long time. Uses a lot of actual historical and scientific facts but pads it just enough to make it pop! :)

The Atlantis series is so intriguing because its central idea, managed evolution of the human race over a hundred thousand years continuing into the present, convincingly seems to have more than a kernel of truth to it. While the writing of the present-day plot elements proceeds at a near chaotic pace, The Atlantis Plague is an improvement over the first book in the series. There had been a break in style between the action portion and the diary-like reminiscences of the discoverer of the atlantean ship, giving the impression of two different writers. In this book, the slower paced sections detailing the coincidence of plagues and evolutionary leaps by mankind are the most interesting parts, and the dizzyingly fast paced action parts seem to simply support that central idea. In other words, the unfolding revelation of mankind's real evolutionary past and future is so original and convincingly presented that the reader is compelled forward through the entire series.

Finished the third book of the Atlantis trilogy... umm. I am left with somewhat ambiguous feelings.Normally I enjoy this kind of galaxy- and time-spanning romp, but somehow in this case... it just did not quite work for me. Something to do with the pace of the narration, after starting out in a quite measured pace and rooted in hard fact and science, it is almost as though it veers off course in the second and third installment, with the plot becoming overloaded and scatty. In the end I was struggling to bring all the threads together – and to be honest was not really trying any more.On the plus side I found the characters had depth to them and are likable/ unlikable. Though actually, thinking about it again, the main characters are so tenacious and somehow survive through the whole trilogy, which cannot be said for the rest of the global population, that you end up feeling that the whole thing is a bit too improbable and constructed.

This is a great book, if mainly what you want is action, violence, killing, but very little character development. Strong, quick acting David is in love with Kate, a geneticist scientist, looking for a cure for autism. They both think they are working to make humanity better, but things are not as they seem. Martin, is Kate's guardian who raised her and works for the organization that has funded her research, but she is really being used for another purpose. More comes to light when she is kidnapped. David rescues her heroically and spectacularly, and this is how they meet. More action occurs, and contact is made with the beings on the ships, and Kate begins to have flashbacks to another life and time. I will have to read the third book, even though I thought there was too much being captured, then being rescued, amongst the world falling apart while this plague designates the entire population, before the purpose of the Atlantis gene was revealed. I think the story line was quite good, but a little less action, and a little more character development would have improved it greatly.

I truly loved the first book in the Origin series, The Atlantis Gene, but this one fell short for me. The Atlantis Gene had a great plot that twisted research, evolution, creation and alien invasion/technology into a VERY well crafted tale. This book, however, was too silly for my taste.**SPOILERS***This book took off with the same interesting characters but really veered off into left field making the story completely unbelievable. Some examples...a small black tile that unfolds outward and upward to create a tent/shelter...okay, not too bad, right? I'd have bought into that idea if the tent/shelter didn't come fully furnished! Complete with beds (linens included), desks, chairs and working showers. Then the suspension/stasis tubes from the first book suddenly become resurrection/cloning tubes...and works differently for different people. Some die outside the tube but are cloned inside the tube...many times over in some cases. Some climb into the tube nearly dead and are resurrected. Some die outside the tube but just their memories are resurrected in someone else inside the tube...come on...pick one and stick with it.What I think bothered me most with this storyline was that Kate (main character from book one) had a child taken from her at birth and she'd been convinced it had been still born. She finds out at the end of book one that the child survived and was in a research lab far, far away. When the first book ended, your imagination allowed you to believe she went in search of her baby. There was literally no mention of the baby in this book...just a whole lot of hunt and find and cloning and reserrection with the humans, Atlantians and hybrid Human/Atlantians.

From Booklist

Terrifying dreams and enigmatic prophecies mean danger for seven teen demigods, but also good times for fans of The Heroes of Olympus series. This third volume thrusts Percy, Jason, Annabeth, Hazel, Leo, Frank, and Piper into action once again. Representing both Greek and Roman camps, the seven companions undertake a mission to prevent the imminent destruction of Rome, the awakening of Gaea, and the end of the world. Meanwhile, they help Annabeth in her quest to recover the ancient statue of Athena stolen from the Parthenon. Along the way, they encounter Nemesis in Utah, Bacchus in Kansas, Phorcys in Atlanta, Aphrodite in Charleston, and Hercules at the Strait of Gibraltar. Throughout the novel, the juxtaposition of humor and terror makes both aspects of the writing more vivid. The demigods use their wits and their weapons skillfully in a string of encounters, and their insecurities make the characters all the more appealing. With a true storyteller’s sense of pacing, Riordan creates another compelling adventure, right down to the cliff-hanger at the end. Stay tuned for volume four. Grades 5-8. --Carolyn Phelan

Stay tuned for volume four. - Carolyn Phelan Booklist Online"After waging two separate quests (The Lost Hero, 2010; The Son of Neptune, 2011), the Greek and Roman demigods of Riordan's Heroes of Olympus quintet join forces. With his now-trademark zero-to-60 acceleration, the author engineers a ghostly possession to set Greeks and Romans at odds and initiates the Prophecy of the Seven, hurtling Annabeth, Percy, Piper, Leo, Hazel, Frank and Jason into a pell-mell flight on the magical trireme Argo II. They seek the titular Mark of Athena, which they hope will provide the key to defeating the vengeful Earth mother, Gaea, or at least some of her giant offspring. As the trireme crosses the country, the pace drags while the demigods sort out relationships and work to figure out both cryptic prophecy and nightmare visions. With sweethearts Annabeth and Percy once again united, much of the tension that powered earlier books is gone. Once the Argo II leaves the United States, though, the pace picks up, and the comically instructive set pieces Riordan's so good at emerge. A Luddite god rails against what he calls the "b-book," which displaced the far superior scroll technology; Annabeth gets a crash course in the cult of Mithros far below the streets of Rome. Here, Riordan's infectious love for his subject matter really comes through, even as he takes some real risks with his characters. A literal cliffhanger leaves eager readers hanging; next stop: Greece-and Tartarus. (glossary) (Fantasy. 10-14) Kirkus"

This was a Christmas present for a friend's grand daughter and the kid loved it which is cool, and appreciated getting it from her "Aunt" Gena, which made me feel good. It was on the top of her list of books she would like to have.

Reading this book series is starting to feel a lot like coming home. A really brutal, terrifying home, what with all of the monsters and war and whatnot, but home nonetheless.Riordan continues to blow me away with these books and I'm really not sure what I'm going to do when I finish this series. But luckily for me, I have almost a thousand pages before I need to worry about that. However, I digress, let's move on to the good stuff! This book! Ahhhhhh!!!!! That covers it pretty accurately. The Percabeth reunion! Perfection. It was done in true Percabeth form. "Hi, sweetheart, I'm sorry I went missing for six months after a nutty goddess stole my memory. Give me a kiss and then we'll go stop the vicious goddess of Earth from rising." I mean, what else did I expect?Coach Hedge. I freaking love Coach Hedge; he's the perfect non chaperone chaperone to have on the "Argo II."I loved seeing the "Big Seven" together for the first time (even if it wasn't the great first meeting) and I really enjoyed watching them grow as a team as the book went on.I love each of the "Big Seven" but seriously, how can anyone not love Leo Valdez? The part with Leo and Echo and Narcissus had me laughing out loud. Oh goodness. Such a great moment. The performing giants! Glad to see that the monsters are broadening their horizons a bit. Killing demigods just doesn't pay the bills, you know.Annabeth is such a boss! I was literally cheering for her when she was on her journey, and she came out victorious! (Kind of, but we'll get to that in a minute.)Thank you, Rick Riordan, for writing a kick butt female heroine that is smart, strong, and brave. I love that Annabeth was/is kind of the leader of the team; everyone looks to her because of her wisdom and knowledge. The feminist in me did a fist pump for that.Ok, that freaking cliff hanger. What the what?! Rick! How could you do that to my babies? Ugh. I knew it was coming, but it was like my stomach dropped down with them. This book was phenomenal! I'm loving this adventure with the gang, no matter how hazardous it is to my emotional health. :o)Onward to the next one!

If you have a reluctant reader, maybe you just need the right material! My 10 year old son is now at an 8th grade reading level (from 4th grade level at the beginning of this school year) thanks to Rick Riordan books!)Riordan has created another great book series that has sparked the LOVE of reading in my child and it's priceless to me! I will buy anything he writes to keep my 10 year old son engaged in reading for the love of it. I love this author's work with all of my heart. If I ever meet Rick Riordan in person, I'm going to shake his hand and thank him for writing outstanding books LOVED by my son. I'll of course ask for an autograph in one of books too! (OR "Please take a sharpie to this Kindle cover! You're THE MAN!")This school year, my son has become highly competitive by earning AR points in school (Accelerated Reader points). There's a donut party kids may attend if they achieve 100 AR Points in a semester. He's going to easily reach this goal since he's tearing through these books!!! Do I love that my boy WANTS to be a super reader?!! Yes, of course!!! I am in two book clubs, and I was bitten by the book bug at that age, and I could not be happier! This momma is really, really happy! I may even have to start reading these to see what all the fuss is about. I enjoy reading young adult books sometimes. I'll just borrow my sons books when he's done.:)

My son absolutely loves this series. Keep writing and he will keep reading!Annabeth is terrified. Just when she's about to be reunited with Percy—after six months of being apart, thanks to Hera—it looks like Camp Jupiter is preparing for war. As Annabeth and her friends Jason, Piper, and Leo fly in on the Argo II, she can't blame the Roman demigods for thinking the ship is a Greek weapon. With its steaming bronze dragon masthead, Leo's fantastical creation doesn't appear friendly. Annabeth hopes that the sight of their praetor Jason on deck will reassure the Romans that the visitors from Camp Half-Blood are coming in peace. And that's only one of her worries. In her pocket Annabeth carries a gift from her mother that came with an unnerving demand: Follow the Mark of Athena. Avenge me. Annabeth already feels weighed down by the prophecy that will send seven demigods on a quest to find—and close— the Doors of Death. What more does Athena want from her?Annabeth's biggest fear, though, is that Percy might have changed. What if he's now attached to Roman ways? Does he still need his old friends? As the daughter of the goddess of war and wisdom, Annabeth knows she was born to be a leader, but never again does she want to be without Seaweed Brain by her side.Narrated by four different demigods, The Mark of Athena is an unforgettable journey across land and sea to Rome, where important discoveries, surprising sacrifices, and unspeakable horrors await. Climb aboard the Argo II, if you dare…
