The use of numerical methods for the analysis, simulation, and design of engineering processes and systems has been increasing at a rapid rate in recent years. The availability of cheap high-speed computing power makes the numerical solution of even complex engineering problems economically feasible. In the face of ever increasing demands on engineering profession to perform better, the students who learn numerical methods in preparing to face the challenges of 21st century should learn not only the theory behind the methods, but also acquire skills to implement the methods for computer solution. In addition, the students should be aware of the many commercial software systems available and their use in the solution of engineering problems. Although a student may not learn all the numerical methods described in this book and use all the software systems available in any one course, he or she should be in a position to intelligently select and use suitable numerical methods and software systems as the need arises in practice.

The use of numerical methods in engineering can be considered partly science and partly art. Thus, a cookbook-type procedure will not be effective in learning the methods. A student should solve a problem using different approaches and a variety of software systems and experiment with the various parameters of the problem. The different results obtained through this process will form an experience base for selecting a suitable method and interpreting the results for a new problem. It is always desirable to compare and verify the results with other available solutions based on engineering judgment and intuition.

This book is intended for courses on numerical methods at the junior and senior level as well as at the beginning graduate level. The book also serves as a reference for numerical methods in engineering. Fortran and C programs, along with illustrative examples, are given in each chapter to implement many of the numerical methods discussed in that chapter. The use of commercial numerical softwares—MATLAB, MAPLE and MATHCAD—in the solution of practical problems is demonstrated in every chapter. Even when a program from a software package is used, we need to understand the basic principles, purpose, and limitations of the program. Often, in many engineering applications, an available standard program cannot be used directly; we need to adapt and modify it. This invariably requires a sound knowledge of the numerical method as well as some computational experience with the method. The book is aimed at presenting numerical methods along with their practical applications in a manner that helps students achieve the goals just outlined.

Organization

Applied Numerical Methods for Engineers is organized into 13 chapters and 6 appendices. Chapter 1 presents an overview of numerical methods, iterative- processes, numerical errors, software available for numerical methods, programming languages, and the various aspects of computer program development. The methods of solving nonlinear equations are given in Chapter 2. The solution of sets of linear algebraic equations is presented in Chapter 3. Both direct and iterative methods are considered. The matrix eigenvalue problem is the topic of Chapter 4. Chapter 5 deals with the methods of curve fitting and interpolation. The probabilistic and statistical methods are considered in Chapter 6. The numerical differentiation and numerical integration are the topics of Chapters 7 and 8, respectively. The numerical solution of ordinary differential equations is considered in Chapters 9 and 10. While Chapter 9 presents the methods of solving initial-value problems, Chapter 10 deals with the solution of boundary-value problems. The numerical solution of partial differential equations is considered in Chapter 11. The optimization and the finite-element methods are presented in Chapters 12 and 13, respectively. Appendices A and B provide the basics of Fortran and C languages while Appendices C, D, and E summarize the basics of MAPLE, MATLAB, and MATHCAD, respectively. A review of matrix algebra is given in Appendix F. Finally, Appendix G presents tables of statistical distributions.

The material of the book provides flexible options for different types of numerical methods courses. A junior and senior level course may cover the basic techniques of Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 5 to 9. A first-level graduate course can cover Chapters 4, 10, 11, 12, and 13 as well. The prerequisites for using the text are elementary calculus, basic concepts of linear algebra, and an introduction to differential equations.

Each topic for Applied Numerical Methods for Engineers is self-contained. British civil servant Fraser offers a thorough, scholarly survey of the origins and history of the Gypsies, the wandering pilgrims who arrived in the Balkans during the Middle Ages and gradually spread over Europe and beyond. In an academic but readable style, he writes of the Gypsies' linguistic and anthropological background, their migrations through Persia and Europe, the 15th-century persecution of them and their attempts to survive repressive legislation. In the 18th and 19th centuries, attitudes toward the Gypsies became somewhat more benign, though the Gypsies continued to resist assimilation. Fraser mentions that Gypsies joined the waves of immigrants to the United States but does not elaborate on their experiences here. After discussing Nazi repression and extermination of Gypsies, he addresses current conditions: migrations are spurred primarily by economic concerns, pentecostal Christianity is becoming popular and Gypsies are forming political organizations. This book describes their history.

The book opens with an investigation of gypsy origins in India. The author then traces the gypsy migration from the early Middle Ages to the present, through the Middle East, Europe and the world. Throughout their known history they have been renowned for their music, metal working, fortune-telling, healing and horse-dealing; but from the outset they outraged the prejudices of the populations they encountered: they were enslaved, harrassed, outlawed and hunted. Yet against all the odds the gypsies have survived, preserving a distinctive heritage and culture that transcends national boundaries. How they did so is the compelling theme of this book.

This new paperback edition has been revised to take account of recent research and of the political changes in Eastern Europe, which have sadly been followed by a resurgence of Gypsy persecution in a number of countries.

I bought the Smuggler's Cove book first, and after going through many of its cocktail recipes I wanted to branch out and try some different tiki cocktails. I think the recipes in Smuggler's Cove are of significantly higher quality. Both books use a lot of ingredients that may be difficult to come by, but the author of this book relies a lot more on artificially flavored spirits, which is not something I am a fan of. If you're looking for great tiki cocktails, I recommend Smuggler's Cove over this one.

Frakie's Tiki Lounge is one of Las Vegas's greatest hidden treasures. If you're not in Vegas or the South Pacific or get freaked out by shrunken heads; this wonderful collection of Frankie's magical elixirs, will excite and alter your palette, your psyche, your ability to speak or operate machinery, and instantly transform your living room into a tropical paradise. (Headhunters not included)

Frankie's Tiki Room is an off the strip gem in Las Vegas and this book conveys the essence of the bar without having to book a flight to Nevada. However, I do recommend you make that trip as Frankie's is not to be missed. It provides background into the Tiki history of Vegas and provides many recipes for original and classic cocktails. The recipes in this book are great for someone who is new to Tiki or is trying to make drinks that can be made with ingredients that the average person can find without much difficulty.

What can be said about perfection? P Moss showcases 60 original cocktails from Frankie's Tiki Room. Each drink is represented by its recipe on one page and a beautifully staged photograph on its adjacent page. Each drink is awarded with its own "fun" rating and a quick, whimsical introduction. For instance, the Sea Hag (p.114) merits three "skulls" and is introduced thus: "A tangy thirst-quencher that will give you the magical power to make those around you disappear." Wow! Other sample entries include: Lovey's Revenge, Scurvy, and Thurston Howl. Of course, the book includes 17 tiki drink classics with given recipes and photos (one drink per page). Beyond the stunning drink photograph/recipe mix, the book dedicates a few pages to showcasing original Frankie's Tiki Mugs. But that's not all! This book provides the reader with a short and not boring history of tiki-themed bars of Las Vegas and of the origins of Frankie's Tiki Room in particular. In essence, this book represents the highest of lowbrow tiki mixology. Not a ring binder bar guide, this book is meant as a functional art piece on par with an Ansel Adams coffee table book. Looking at one stunning picture after another induces a wistfulness in this mostly teetotaler reviewer.5 Skulls!!!

I have frequented Frankie's on several occasions. When I saw they had written a cocktail book, I was overjoyed. It did not disappoint. If you're looking for excellent tiki drink recipes, this is the book for you. Be aware though, this is not for those looking at quick drinks. Be prepared to put some time and effort into the drinks.

I bought this book for a family member, when I looked through it I thought that is sounded very cool. To my surprise I was given the same book as a gift too. Going to make lots of good tropical drinks!

So, a book about search algorithms by a professor of African American Studies...Next in this series is a book by a Michelin Star Chef on the censorship of overtly phallic garden variety edibles by algebraic "foodie" algorithms on social media: "Veggies of Erection: how Instagram and Pinterest are destroying green libido, and ten delicious ways to prepare them!"I mean, c'mon...Seriously, I gave this one a chance but the book is a tease in the first half and a disappointment in the second. Draw your own parallels with your private life here but, c'mon...The writing is obtuse, riddled with circular arguments, name dropping, and the use of other people's better arguments about the very thing you're supposed to be an expert about. Which is a shame because it is an important subject that deserves better treatment. Ms. Noble's arguments ultimately devolve into "trust me, I'm right because such-and-such wrote about it already in...and I agree!" Don't believe me?"Recent research on Google by Siva Vaidhyanathan...who has written one of the most important books on Google to date, demonstrates its dominance over the information landscape and forms the basis of a central theme in this research."And here again,"Frank Pasquale, a professor of law at the University of Maryland, has also forewarned of the increasing levels of control that algorithms have over the many decisions made about us, from credit to dating options...."and again,"The political economic critique of Google by Elad Segev, a senior lecturer ... charges that we can no longer ignore the global dominance of Google and..."and wait, there's more,"Molly Niesen at the University of Illinois has written extensively on the loss of public accountability by federal agencies such as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which is a major contribution..."Alright, I know some of you are going to say that it is ok to cite other people's work, but beyond her statements, no further exposition is offered. The whole thing is like this.What's worse, It takes Ms. Noble roughly half the book to end her long intro about her plan of attack. Thirty-seven pages in she is still telling you:"This work is addressing a gap in scholarship on how search works and what it biases, public trust in search, the relationship of search to information studies, and the ways in which African Americans, among others, are mediated and commodified in Google."Can we get on with it?Oh, and her solution for all this is a tad comical, if not heroically ironic:“In my own imagination and in a project I am attempting to build, access to information on the web could be designed akin to a color picker tool or some other highly transparent interface, so that users could find nuanced shades of information and easily identify the borderlands between news and entertainment, entertainment and pornographers, or journalism and academic scholarship.”Break out your crayons and stop your engineers Google, all you need is a color palette!Ugh. If only the absence of color-blindness could be fixed with more color eh? Search results are not primarily the problem, lack of critical thinking skills is. Blocking misleading, inflammatory results for black-on-white crime cannot be the solution when there are people out there with racial anxieties worked to a frenzy that will keep looking until they find what matches their worldview.If all this weren't sad enough, in a last-ditch effort to end on a strong note, she caps the book off with a piece about Yelp and its business model, but I thought we were talking about Google?Cannot recommend.

I hope Google and Yahoo's executive teams take notice of this brilliantly written book by Dr. Safiya Umoja Noble. I appreciate her points that many times our internet searches are influenced by algorithms created by humans who potentially bring their gender and racial biases and in some cases racism into their mathematical outputs. I enjoyed this book and will recommend it to my colleagues.

An important text for anyone struggling to make sense of the troubling equity issues within the technology industry and platforms. I highly recommend Algorithms of Oppression.

Thank you for centering critical race theory (CRT) as the epistemic lens through which we must evaluate the social impact of predictive analytics.There is sections that at first glance feel *jargon laden*, but a patient reader will be rewarded with rich insights brought in by the information/library science expertise. We’re in an era where the Google color palette is immediately recognizable on the cover but few people pause to consider the implications of our communal knowledge being processed and delivered by the multi billion dollar company that’s far from politically or ideologically neutral.She does a good job forcing us to pause and consider why Google Search initially generated images of Gorrilas when ‘Black Woman’ was entered as a keyword. This error and similar cases have since been programmatically removed from the search engine but the more global questions-how did we transition our communal knowledge and it’s curation to neoliberal industry absent public comment, how do we intervene in the epistemic injustice wrought by systems embedded in the public conscious as beacons of progress and innovation-remain.Algorithms of Oppression is a critical read for anyone tryna ‘Get Out!’ #JordanPeele style from the twin rise of the Trump regime and neoliberal technocracy. My only critique is the book could have benefitted from some stronger editing to elicit clearer synthesis of some of Noble’s unique insights specifically grounded in information science. The outrageous racism revealed in algorithmic outputs takes center stage and maybe rightly so, but there are points she makes along the way, that are being neglected by other scholars in the field that I would have like to seen greater focus on and more explicitly stated. I imagine it’s tough for brilliant women of color in tech to find editors that get CRT and the intersection of tech and humanities within the demographics of the American publishing world. Ultimately, the strength of the research goes along way to compensate for those shortcomings. I’m so curious to see what she will write next, the exhausting impotence of the agnostic left, weary soldiers propping up the failed project of “fairness” are not ready for this scholar’s revitalization of liberation theory post digital turn.
