These are usually dealt with by using parameterised descriptions of, e.g., the treatments of convection, rotation,angularmomentumtransport,theequationofstate,atomicdi?usion andsettlingofelements,magneto-hydrodynamicalprocesses,andmore.There is a dearth of observational constraints on these processes, thus solar values areoftenassignedtothem.Yetitishardtoimaginethatonesetofparameters is appropriate for the vast range of stars.

The recent research domain of asteroseismology studies the internal structure of stars, which is not directly observable, through the interpretation of the frequency spectra of stellar oscillations. The basic principles of asteroseismology are very similar to those developed by earth seismologists. Stellar interiors can be probed from oscillations because different oscillation modes penetrate to different depths inside the star. Asteroseismology is the only available method to derive the internal structure of the stars with high precision.

This book – the first on asteroseismology – offers a practical guide for graduate students and scientists working in stellar astrophysics. It provides a general introduction to asteroseismology and comprehensive coverage of all its aspects: fundamental theory, observations and observational techniques, methodology of data analysis and seismic interpretations of various classes of multi-periodic pulsating stars.

About the Author

Conny Aerts is full professor at the University of Leuven, Belgium, as well as professor by special appointment on the Chair Asteroseismology, University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands. Jørgen Christensen-Dalsgaard is full professor of helio- and asteroseismology at Aarhus University, Denmark. Don Kurtz is full professor at the University of Central Lancashire, UK.
Their collective expertise encompasses all aspects of asteroseismology. All three authors are experienced lecturers and participate in numerous scientific committees. Their research teams enjoy international recognition and are heavily involved in various ground-based and satellite projects on asteroseismology.

I bought this book knowing nothing about it and I was so pleasantly surprised by it! It was one of the best books I read all year. I found it a cross between the fun, intimate first person story telling of a book like "Confessions of a Shopaholic" and a lovely, historical book like "Anne of Green Gables." I would especially recommend this book for young women, but as an adult it completely held my attention. The narrator had my complete empathy. She was a credible, relatable narrator. I'm excited to read more from this author.

My mother and aunt once worked as "hired girls" for wealthy families, some Jewish--this story is a glimpse into what their lives may have been like.I found the characterizations well differentiated; I had a clear sense from her language and emotions that the heroine was a young person (though pretending to be adult), while her employers spoke, thought and acted their ages.The portrayal of the Jewish family was sympathetic to the religion and culture, and seemed to avoid stereotype. Being set in 1911, Judaism had not yet experienced the horrors of the holocaust.Overall, it was a well written, engaging story of a young girl forced to grow up too soon, but who managed to do it well.

Well written. I felt as though I was living in 1911. I enjoy historical novels about servants and the people they serve, how they interact, the way they become part of the family, although they never really do.This story surrounds a young Catholic girl working for a Jewish family and their differences, not only in religion but in their stations in life. Although this book was written for teens/young adults, as an older woman, I still found it a good read. I did have to remind myself along the way that the main character, Janet, was only 14 years old and so her immaturity was normal for her age.I imagine a young adult might enjoy this book more than I did because she would be able tor relate better than I did, but I still found "Hired Girl" worth reading.

The Hired Girl was an excellent story about a bright, young girl at the turn of the century. She uses her wits and work ethic to escape from the poverty and neglect she experienced on her father's farm . In the city, she finds work in the household of a wealthy Jewish family. The author wrote realistically about the clash between the girl's Catholic values and the Jewish values of the family for whom she worked. The characters were well-developed, the historical period was well-researched, and the description of chores a hired girl had to do made for a fascinating reading experience.Readers from middle school to adult would enjoy this very engaging story.

I loved "The Hired Girl." The story starts off strong, the middle sags a bit and the ending does not disappoint. The writing, the characters and the dialogue were superb throughout the novel. Written in diary form, Jan Skraggs, a fourteen year old with literary aspirations, runs away from her father's farm in Penn. and finds work in Baltimore with a family as a hired girl.Joan's voice is strong and authentic throughout the novel. The prose at times is lush and quite lyrical. Life in early 1900's Baltimore is replete with details that make this time period come to life. The struggles with identity, religious differences and prejudice, the pain of young love, a class system hard to escape are all interwoven in this novel.I also loved all the literary allusions to such works as "Jane Eyre" and Charles Dickens appropriate for the time period."The Hired Girl" in my opinion, ranks alongside "A Northern Light" by Jennifer Connelly and Carolyn Meyer's "Harvey Girls." Highly recommended!

I loved this book. Every time I opened it, I felt like I was falling into it, and I had a hard time pulling myself back out when I needed to go do something else. I found Joan believable, funny, inventive, and a convincing mix of intellect, ambition, hope, and natural immaturity. She was such a hard worker that she sometimes seemed older than her fourteen years, and yet her crushes and jealousies and confusions rang true for a girl her age. I thought the writing was beautiful, especially the way the author contrasted the class, gender, and religious restrictions of the time (1911). The ending was satisfying, but I was sorry when the book ended, because I wanted it to just keep going.

Tired of being overworked and mistreated by her father, 14-year-old Joan runs away from the family farm and heads off to Baltimore.Once there, alone and confused, Joan manages to land herself a hired girl position with a wealthy Jewish family. She details her experiences, both with her work and the assorted household members, as well as general details about life in 1911 from the perspective of a young woman in a diary.As Joan is taking catechism classes to become an official Catholic, while working hard to understand the intricate details of an orthodox Jewish household, there is also a great deal of thought and discussion about religion. Schlitz addresses the subject with intelligence and compassion, in a way that both complex yet easily understood by adolescent readers.A sequel about the next phase of Joan's life (not mentioned here specifically so as not to spoil the book's ending) would definitely be a welcome addition!

The second in the series and the characters continue to entertain while solving a murder. Propriety and impropriety are weighed as the mystery is unraveled. The verbal parlays between the male and female leads are entertaining.

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of this author's books and this one certainly follows suit. I think it may be one of her best.

Beatrice is now in London and her family has latched onto a lie she told to further her last case, but it did much for a while - her invented and entirely fictitious thwarted lover. Now though things are too much- her aunt is convinced she must find the man despite his wife and children to find similar traits to finally marry off her unwanted niece. So as anyone would do she kills him - by filing an obituary on the fictional man. But while at the office dropping off the notice, a man drops dead at her feet. Bea recognizes the very distinctive knife in his back and sets out to investigate. But somehow Kesgrave has found her - he recognized the false obit for what it was and connected that with the paper's description of the missing female witness. They work together again to solve the dandy's murder and meet some interesting folks along the way. They also struggle to understand what exactly their relationship is and why they are compelled to solve these crimes.

In this second book in the Beatrice Hyde-Clare trilogy, we find bookish and brainy Bea bewildered when a debonair dandy falls at her feet. And promptly dies. With a knife in his back. Not just any knife, but a knife which she has most certainly seen somewhere before.Her search for clues takes her to the British Museum, where the Duke of Kesgrave is following the same investigative trail as Bea. Or is he just following Bea?The growing admiration and affection woven into the witty banter between Bea and the Duke is just adorable. In this book, we meet a few new eccentric characters, learn the fascinating origin of the word “fazed”, and finally hear “the three loveliest words in the English language” from the Duke’s own lips: “OUR next steps”.I spotted a couple of anachronistic words, but they weren’t terribly jarring. I think this novel’s pacing suffered a bit because of numerous flashbacks to the events in book one, which bogged down the flow of the new story line, but even so, it was delightful."Satisfied with how well Bea and her pet [lion cub] were getting along, her ladyship sat in an armchair upholstered in red silk and said, 'I name all my pets after my dead husband because I’m so accustomed to saying his name in a tone of fond exasperation and baffled tolerance. Do you think Henry would have minded?'”

I read this book through Kindle Unlimited. This story is a follow-up to A Brazen Curiosity, which I really enjoyed! Fortunately I didn't need to wait too long for the next installment about our intrepid heroine Beatrice, who just started coming out of her shell at age 26 in the last book and is now back in London for the season. Once again, she stumbles across another murder victim and uses her keen intelligence to solve the murder. The duke is back as her sidekick (or is she his?) and their banter continues. We don't hear the narrative from the duke's point of view, but he seems very engaged with Beatrice, who is trying to avoid developing a tendre for him as he is "beyond her touch". The romantic aspect is a cliffhanger which leaves me anxious for the next installment, which is hopefully coming soon.Lynn Messina's writing is excellent. Although her books are usually a relatively short read, I take as long to read them as those from other authors with a much higher page count because I don't want to miss a moment.

WHEN? O WHEN WILL THE DUKE WAKE UP???Actually I doubt its the Duke who is unaware! I think he's just following her example of ignoring the 800 pound (Love) monkey in the room.Then again who knows what the author has planned for these two, as the saying goes, read on, in this case.!!! Wanting to know the How and When/Where that these two really get together is a part of why we (reader's) will continue to follow these excellent well plotted, written stories.A wonderful read, I'm now on to reading he third book in this series.

This is the second book in Beatrice Hyde-Claire mysteries-to be read in order. I am enjoying this series so much, I have ordered the next and am sure I will pre-order book 4.When I sampled the first book, I was not familiar with the author and didn’t expect anything special. It was a very pleasant surprise. I am glad to say this was just as much fun to read as the first.

I find I cannot stop reading the series I started with the first and now I'm going on to the 3rd as I speak! I love the witticism with the main character she is endearing and I love the romantic or Slow Burn relationship to be! I highly recommend this series!
